The most common piping material for sewer lines in Los Angeles is vitrified clay piping. This material sweats causing the ground soil around the pipe to remain damp. This in turn attracts the attention of roots as a constant source of water. Roots will over time work their way into the sewer pipe via the joints in the system. As this occurs the roots will seal their own entry into the pipe. For this reason roots are acknowledged as both common and acceptable with regular maintenance being performed to remove root intrusions from blocking the line.
When left unmaintained for extended periods of time. Roots can eventually block and/or damage the clay pipe they are intruding into. While blockages can certainly be annoying, damage can be both annoying and costly. In order to significantly reduce the risks of roots damaging a clay pipe a regular maintenance schedule should be performed.
